A common notion among some today, among both those within the Church and outside of it, is that the teaching that Jesus was both human and divine (or, as Martin Luther's Small Catechism puts it, "true God, Son of the Father from eternity, and true man, born of the Virgin Mary"[see below]) was a later development.
