[I just shared this over on Facebook.]
"You can take the wisdom of this world
”And give it to the ones who think it all ends here..."
I love these lines from Bruce Cockburn's song, 'The Hills of Morning.'
Those who are wise in the eyes of this world may win their whole lives here. They may be comfortable and catered to. But even the best this world has to offer ends for us at the grave.
Real wisdom though, belongs to those who, through God's Word and witness in Christ, know that ultimately this world, which He will one day judge and destroy, and eternity with God are in the hands of Christ alone.
Jesus Christ, God the Son, became human, then gave His sinless life on a cross to take the punishment and death you and I deserve as sinners. God the Father then raised Jesus from the dead to open eternity with God to all who, by the power of God's Word (including the Word made visible in Holy Baptism and Holy Communion), daily turn from sin (repent) and believe (or trust) in Jesus to forgive our sins and make us eternally new.
Jesus doesn't promise that Christians will be powerful, important, wealthy, or immune in this world. But He does promise to be with us always in this life and, when we die, to usher us into His Father's perfect house where we live with God forever.
Jesus promises to all who turn to Him: "Do not be worried and upset...Believe in God and believe also in me. There are many rooms in my Father's house, and I am going to prepare a place for you. I would not tell you this if it were not so. And after I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to myself, so that you will be where I am." (John 14:1-3, Good News Translation)
