This cry of Christ from the cross was not the expression of a man overcome by the futility of the world.
This instead, is the cry of triumph by God the Son Who, having become human for our sake, took all our sins into His body, bore the punishment for sin that we all deserve, and opened up eternity to all who trust in Him.
Jesus literally says, “It is completion!” This means He completed His mission as “the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29)
By His self-sacrificing death, Jesus Christ has forever overcome the condemnation for death that you and I deserve!
When, on the third day—the first day being Good Friday, the second being Holy Saturday, the third being Easter Sunday—God the Father raised Jesus from the tomb, Jesus’ conquest of sin, death, futility, and the devil was definitively and irrefutably confirmed.
And so we can trust it when Jesus says, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
And we can trust Him too when He tells us, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.” (John 12:26-26)
So now, friends, however weak your faith may be—even if your faith on hearing the promises of Jesus and the story of what He has done for you is no more than the desire for faith— turn to Him with the assurance that he will never reject those who want Him. That’s because, more than anything, He wants you!
You can trust that all of this is most certainly true. And you can trust in Jesus Christ.
